Team for Man Utd
Sam at this morning's press conference: "Our injury problems are worrying. Reid, Collins, Demel, Henry, Poyet and Carroll lie in our medical room at the moment. We're not sure how many of them will make Sunday and it's a big, three-game week for us."

Does that mean Jenkinson, Kouyate, Tomkins, all back?

Fill your boots.

Whenever I speak to anyone about West Ham this season they mention our performances at home against Liverpool and Man City.
We stumbled onto a way of playing that was exciting and effective against good teams.
The fact that the manager has abandoned it for what he knows and trusts in the face of evidence shows why he isn't the man to take us forward.
The continued selection of Nolan has gone beyond logic into the perverse.

Re: Team for Man Utd
In light of having a weaker defence, most managers would try not to invite pressure on the defence. Sam has a some what different approach to football.

Good luck Sam if you're going to sit back and try to defend.

Nolegs will start today, no doubt about it, after the managers comments.

Near the beginning of the season, when we looked good, I said the problem will be once Nolegs is fit, he'd be shoehorned back in EVENTUALLY. It was Comma or Face that took me to task, telling me they'd pick me up on it later in the season.

They haven't picked me up on it.

Seth

We have always done best against the better sides when we have played at a high tempo and gone for it... as a club we just can't do the sitting back game (with one or two exceptions - Chelsea away last year).

If it's the policy to try and get to half time 0-0 and then try and nick a goal in the second half then that is shocking. Away then it could be fair enough but if that is what we were doing v Hull then it's ridiculous and plain wrong.

Firstly we just invite the opposition on to us... Hull could and should have been two up at half time.

Secondly it just creates a bad atmosphere... the crowd get agitated, rightly boo the performance.

If this is all some master plan by BFS then it worked that day more by luck than judgement (as said we could easily have been 2 down).... it is just a ploy to get Nolan in the side, nothing more, justified after the event as a tactical master stroke... and listening to the media afterwards they fall for it hook line and sinker!!

I have no doubt the fat man will try the same again tomorrow and I won't be surprised if we come seriously unstuck.

Hope I'm wrong but I doubt it.

Adrian, Nolan, Song, Sakho and 7 others ( including Carroll if he's fit).

Nolan,

Re: Team for Man Utd
If he plays the front six as per the Man city game we will win:

Song
Noble
Amalfitano
Downing
Sakho
Valencia

I expect a couple of changes to the above and more likely to see Nolan and Jarvis. Can't wait!

Re: Team for Man Utd
I would start Jarvis instead of Morgan. When Morgan starts games he doesn't seem nowhere near as effective. Wjen Jarvis started against WBA he looked decent. I just think we should have a right go at them, with attack being the best form of defense in this one.

I agree with you Alf and to capit all I dreamed about the match last night.
Very unusual for me to dream, yet I dreamt I was watching TV and saw Valencia score and we won 1-0.
Even though I don't usually bet I will chuck a few quid at that despite dreaming we were wearing a white kit!
Would regret it if it came true !!!

Re: Team for Man Utd
I have thought about this a bit more and risking JOB at CB with the aim of getting Kouyate in midfield to give them more to think about and protect the back four a little more.

------------------------Adrian

Jenkinson----Tomkins---JOB----Cresswell

------------------------Noble

---------Kouyate----------Song

---------------------Downing

--------Sakho-------------------Valencia

Nice summary of what you think is happening and it is a plausible explanation IMO too (not that this means much :-) ).

BFS, has in his press conference, positioned for playing Nolan with comments about the players that can take the pressure at this time of the season.

I am certain we will lose now :-(

Re: Team for Man Utd
Why would he miss any games?

Sore foot from kicking the ball too much?
Exhaustion from running around too much?

we would be lucky if Nolan missed one game

Re: Team for Man Utd
With 3 games in a week, Nolan will play in at least one of them, we're not going to keep the best team for 3 games on the trot.
As long as the best team plays against wba, I'm not too bothered about next two league games.

Re: Team for Man Utd
[It feels a bit tin hat to write this all down, but:]

Sam is deliberately lining up the team to just absorb the opposition for the first 45 minutes with no intention of scoring (Joey O'Brien mentioned this in his recent article: "we got in half-time at nil-nil, which is what we wanted", not 1-0 up, mind. 0-0.). He tells Valencia and Downing to play wide and occupy the opposition full-backs - so we're not seeing much if anything from them. The "game plan" against anyone we've played recently is to keep it 0-0 until the second half and then try to nick it.

This "strategy" means he can play Nolan in the middle. Nolan's job is nominally purely defensive. But really, Sam is hoping that there is some passage of play where Nolan gets a chance, e.g., the set piece where someone tries to drop the ball over Nolan's shoulder and he gets a strike running in on goal. As soon as Nolan's scored, or hit the bar, he can justify including him for another few matches. In the second half, we are maybe chasing the game, and he can rearrange, put Stewie at the tip of the diamond, and see what we can get.

God knows why things look this way.

There was a game earlier when Nolan was out and we were excited to see a better performance and the team was flat and disappointing. Lacked a leader. Maybe Sam is convinced that he has to find a way to start Nolan every match he can because Nolan "gets the team playing"?
